Bereavement Support

Contact the HDH Family Support Team on: 01865 794749 for further information

1-1 support

The Family Support Team provides 1-1 counselling support for parents accessing Helen & Douglas House. This can take place in the hospice and/or at your home. After an initial meeting you will be allocated one of our trained counsellors. This support can begin from the first stay at Helen & Douglas House, through to bereavement support.

Peer to Peer Support (P2P)

HDH bereaved parents who have undergone 1:1 support or support groups have volunteered and been trained  to support newly bereaved parents. Parents referred for P2P support will also see a Family Support Worker. If you would like to meet up with another parent, please call the Family Support Team and ask for Marie Murray or Lilla Machnio. We provide this service for HDH parents only.

We hold workshops for current and bereaved parents. These usually have a particular focus or theme, (often suggested by parents themselves), and are a great opportunity for families to come together, share experiences and support each other. The workshops are facilitated by a FSBV team member. Please contact the Family Support Team for further information.

Bereaved Dads Group

This unique and popular group began in 2011 and has since built up a community of bereaved dads who support each other, for a short period, or over some years, whether they attend regularly or not. Meeting around 6 times a year, the weekend morning sessions are also supplemented by away-days and weekends. Some dads have no surviving children, some have lost children as babies and others have lost older children. Some have been bereaved recently, others some years ago.

Open to any bereaved dad, including those connected with Helen & Douglas House, this is for dads who believe talking and listening to other men may help. Dads say that they value the chance to share their own experiences and to know that they are not alone. Each workshop has a focus on a topic chosen by those attending and specific time is devoted to each dad.

The group is facilitated by Tim Whitworth, an HH bereaved dad, and Marie Murray from the HDH Family Support & Bereavement Team. Contact Marie for further details.

Parents Support group (PSG)

The Parents Support Group is for bereaved parents who have undergone 1:1 support and closed group sessions before accessing PSG. The group facilitates itself and there is no input from the FSBV team, although the team will be present to welcome the group and provide guidance where needed. The idea is for the PSG to take ownership and decide how they want to develop. It is a chance to meet other parents in an informal setting.

Grandparents support group

We provide a group for grandparents to get together and talk to others about their grief. If you are a grandparent, or a parent who would like to refer your parents, please contact Lorraine Byles for more details.
