A gift in your Will

After taking care of your loved ones please think about leaving a gift to Helen & Douglas House. Gifts in Wills are crucial to us, without them we wouldn’t be able to help as many families as we do. Leaving us a gift in your Will ensures that we can continue to offer care and support to those who need us both now and in the future. However large or small your gift is, every penny will make a difference.

Why should you write a Will?

Your Will is one of the most important documents you will ever write. It is the only way you can stipulate who benefits from your Will and can also minimise the impact of inheritance tax.

Families are often complicated these days; this can cause complications for inheritance if you die without a Will. Did you know that if you and your partner are not married and you do not have Wills you cannot inherit each other’s estates - even if you have children together? Without a Will the law decides who inherits your assets which may mean that they go to people you did not intend them to.

Not only is providing an up to date Will the only way to ensure that your wishes are honoured after your passing, it alleviates the pressure in what can be a difficult time for those left behind.

Reduce Inheritance Tax by 4% by leaving a gift to charity

A legacy left to charity is exempt from inheritance tax. From April 2012 changes to inheritance tax mean that if you leave 10% or more of your net estate to a charity or charities, the rate of inheritance tax payable on the remainder of the estate will be reduced by 40% to 36%. This means you can leave a more significant gift to charity should you wish to, with less effect on the value of any other gifts you leave to your family and friends.

Different types of legacies

Residuary: The remainder of your estate once all the gifts have been distributed. It can be a percentage or the whole of the remainder of the estate.

Pecuniary: A fixed sum of money. It can be from a few pounds to thousands of pounds. You may need to review your Will from time to time as your circumstances change.

Specific: A specific gift such as jewellery, a painting or stocks and shares.

If you already have an up to date Will but would like to leave us a gift the easiest way to do this is to fill in a codicil form in the presence of two witnesses and ask your solicitor to keep it with your will. You can download one here or ask us to send you one.
